The quality of speech communication systems, e.g., digital hearing aids and hands-free devices is degraded in the presence of room reverberation. This leads to a reduction in hearing comfort and to a lower speech intelligibility for the listener. Therefore, dereverberation systems aim to increase the intelligibility and hence, to enhance the listening comfort. Furthermore, for the purpose of automatic speech recognition algorithms, the use of anechoic speech is beneficial and therefore dereverberation enables the way for further processing.

Although conventional dereverberation systems already achieve good results, they still produce artifacts such as musical tones. This thesis investigates different psychoacoustically motivated approaches which exploit the masking properties of the human auditory system in order to enhance conventional dereverberation approaches.

By means of an analysis of the spectrograms and a listening test, this thesis shows that some approaches known from literature provide an audible reduction of musical tones, whereas others seem to achieve a higher level of hearing comfort.
