IKS and Analog Devices to Showcase AOC at ISE

The Institute of Communication Systems (IKS) and Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI), a leading global high performance analog technology company, unveiled the world’s first implementation of RWTH’s Active Occlusion Cancelation technologies for earbuds, headphones, hearing aids and hearables.

The audio demo was part of the Analog Devices booth (Hall 14, Booth C170) at the ISE show in Amsterdam, 11-14 Feb, 2020 – one of the leading international fairs in the field of audio/video and system integration. The demo will feature the new algorithm patented by IKS, running on the ADAU1787 and ADAU1788 hearables solutions from ADI.

The algorithm developed at the university effectively cancels the occlusion effect. Stefan Liebich, one of the inventors of the technology from RWTH-IKS explains: “Our award-winning technology allows for natural own-voice perception even when you wear closed or tight-fitting earbuds. Your own voice is perceived as if you weren’t wearing headphones or earbuds at all. Our algorithms enable devices that are truly natural and all-day wearable.” Prof. Peter Jax, head of IKS, comments, “We invented the technology at the institute using complex mathematical models, but now that we have a real-world implementation on the Analog Devices silicon, we can bring the benefits directly to consumers.”

Subbu Tvb, Strategic Marketing Manager, Analog Devices added: “We see this exciting technology as a breakthrough in hearables for on-ear and over-the-ear headphones and earbuds. Our collaboration also shows the flexibility and performance that can be achieved with ADAU1787 and ADAU1788. This technology is only available on Analog Devices products and has the potential to provide the next must-have features for our customers in the hearables market.”

This research topic has won 12/2018 the "Patent of the Month" at RWTH Aachen University, recieved in April 2019 the "RWTH Innovation Award" and is currently being supported by the RWTH Innovation GmbH with the "Innovation Sprint" programme.
