Exam

The exam is held orally on 30.07. 9:00-12:00.

In this semester, there is only one common registration for both exams "Forward Error Correction and Digital Modulation".

If you want to take a repetition of the exam "Forward Error Correction and Digital Modulation", please register for the exam and notify Mrs. Sedgwick. If you want to take the exam for the current course "Modern Channel Coding for Wireless Communications", no further action (except registration for the exam) is required.

Starting in summer term 2018, this lecture is replaced by Modern Channel Coding for Wireless Communications with a shift of focus to iteratively decoded codes. Channel codes with non-iterative decoding and modulation are covered in Advanced Coding and Modulation.

Contents

This one-semester course is part of the Master Programme Communications Engineering at RWTH. The lecture Forward Error Correction and Digital Modulation addresses the aspects of channel coding and digital modulation in modern communication systems. The first part of the lecture covers different standard techniques of channel coding for error correction and error detection

  • Linear Block Codes
  • Cyclic Codes
  • Convolutional Codes and their decoding
  • Turbo Codes

In the second part the lecture deals the baseband and the bandpass transmission

  • Digital Modulation
  • Intersymbol Interference
  • Matched Filter

Furthermore, applications are discussed such as

  • GSM (cyclic codes, convolutional codes)
  • UMTS (Turbo codes)
