Abstract

The concept of near end listening enhancement has been proposed for improving the speech intelligibility of telecommunication equipment in the presence of ambient noise. It is a signal processing framework that acts on the received signal from the far end speaker to reduce the listening effort of the near end speaker.
However, the round-trip delay is strictly limited in modern mobile telecommunication systems, which urges to reduce the filtering delay for any near end listening enhancement system. Additionally, a filter-banks with non-uniform resolution have proven beneficial in many speech enhancement systems.
In this paper, we propose a combination of the concept of near end listening enhancement with an approach to realize filter-banks with a non-uniform resolution and a very low delay. The results show that a considerable improvement of speech intelligibility can by achieved by a non-uniform frequency resolution. On the other hand, it is possible to drastically reduce the algorithmic delay without reducing the listening enhancement.
