EURASIP Fellow Grade to Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Vary

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Vary from the RWTH Aachen University received the highest award granted by the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP) on September 2nd, 2015.

With the appointment as 'Fellow' his outstanding achievements in the broad field of wireless speech- and audio-communications are appreciated. The price was awarded at the EUSIPCO 2015 conference opening in Nice, Coté d’Azur, France.

The European Association for Signal Processing was founded on September, 1st 1978 dealing with problems of signal processing in diverse technical and medical fields. Each year, the EURASIP Board of Directors elevates a select group of up to four signal processing researchers to 'EURASIP Fellow', the Association's most prestigious honor. The other three awards went to the USA, Italy and France.

Peter Vary headed the research team (Philips, IBM), which in 1988 won the standardization competition for the GSM full-rate speech codec. Since 1990, he chairs the Institute of Communication Systems and Data Processing at RWTH Aachen University whose research continuously contributed to various international speech codec standardizations. Besides speech coding, Peter Vary and his team have established numerous innovations to the area of speech signal processing which opened new directions of research and applications. Some of these proposals have been accepted widely by the speech processing community and have been taken over by industry for digital cell phones and hearing aids. The Institute of Communication Systems congratulates Prof. Vary on this outstanding award, which documents the high relevance and international impact of his research.
