150 Years of RWTH | PNZ Annual Calendar with IKS Patent

The Patent and Standards Centre celebrates the 150th anniversary of the RWTH with 12 Aachen patents selected from the "Patent of the Month" (PdM) series. For more than ten years, this format has been used to draw attention to outstanding, historically significant and sometimes bizarre patents as well as to the importance of industrial property rights.

AES 147 in New York and WASPAA 2019 in New Paltz

In October, our doctoral researcher Tobias Kabzinski and Stefan Kühl joined the 147th Audio Engineering Society Convention. Mr. Kabzinski presented his poster on "An Adaptive Crosstalk Cancellation System Using Microphones at the Ears" in a session on spatial audio.

In this winter term the block seminar "Der Ingenieur als Manager" took place in the first week. During this week, students of IK und TI learn methods and procedures of self-analysis and self-management.

"Borchers-Plakette" for Dr.-Ing. Markus Niermann

Markus Niermann was awarded with the "Borchers-Plakette" in September of this year. The "Borchers-Plakette" is awarded to PhD students at RWTH Aachen University who have completed their doctoral examination with "summa cum laude". The award took place during the graduate festival and was presented by the Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens Ohm.

ICA in Aachen

The "23rd International Congress on Acoustics" was chaired this year by Prof. Dr. Michael Vorländer and Prof. Janina Fels. And so the visit of the ICA led the scientists of the institute only to the Eurogress. Stefan Liebich and Johannes Fabry presented their research work in the area of "Active Noise Cancellation" as part of a poster session.

Visit of Dr. Elko and Dr. Meyer from mh acoustics

We were pleased to welcome Dr. Gary W. Elko and his colleague Dr. Jens M. Meyer to the institute. Dr. Elko is managing director and co-founder of mH acoustics. During the ICA 2019 in Aachen, he took the opportunity to visit the IKS and to personally install the latest hardware for the Eigenmike®. In retun, we offered Dr. Elko and Dr. Meyer special 3D sounds from our IKS|Lab.

EUSIPCO 2019, 2th-6th September, A Coruña, Spain

The Institute of Communication Systems was represented at the 27th European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO) in A Coruña, Spain, by Tobias Kabzinski and Matthias Schrammen. Initially, Mr. Kabzinski presented research about robust narrowband direction-of-arrival estimation. After that, Mr. Schrammen presented both his contributions about microphone array geometry estimation with few acoustic sources and a novel approach to efficiently combine beamforming and acoustic echo control for speech enhancement.

Best Master Thesis Award 2019 for Alexander Bohlender

This year, a graduate received the Best Master Thesis Award 2019 during the Colloquium Communications Technology. Alexander Bohlender was awarded for his outstanding master thesis "Combined Beamforming and Acoustic Echo Cancellation for Speech Enhancement".
