With the incorporation of the Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) in the Long-Term Evolution (LTE), it is possible to extend the fast data rates offered within this standard to a point-to-multipoint mode. With IP multicast and using a physical multicast channel on the radio interface, the data can be transmitted to an arbitrary number of users. Specifically for live media streaming, where the delay budget does not allow for retransmissions, the system design must implement a stronger robustness mechanism that provides a guarantee of quality of service (QoS) to a majority of the users. The broadcasted media can be protected from transmit errors by combining an application-layer forward-error correction (AL-FEC) with a physical-layer protection, using a robust modulation and coding scheme (MCS).

Typically, the audio and the video streams are multiplexed before splitting into segments to which the AL-FEC is applied. However, losses of video or audio are perceived differently by the user. Furthermore, the most effective protection scheme is different depending on the size of the media segment, which in turn relies on the media bitrate that differs significantly between audio and video. For these reasons, it can be advantageous to protect the audio and video streams separately. This thesis investigates different protection mechanisms for demultiplexed media streams of different bitrates, by means of physical- and application-layer protection with the aim of evaluating the spectral efficiency obtained under different combinations of MCS and AL-FEC.
