Hierarchical Modulation enables unequal priority transmissions using signal constellation of non-uniformly spaced constellation points. It allows to multiplex and to modulate multiple streams of user data into a single stream of modulation symbols. One prominent practical implementation of hierarchical modulation is the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) e.g. DVB-T (terrestrial television), DVB-H (handhelds) and DVB-SH (satellite services to handhelds). Hierarchical modulation in DVB ensure transmission and reception of high quality video information, at the same time it can take into account low quality information when the signal to noise ratio (SNR) condition is not good enough.
This thesis aims at designing a new digital communication system which allows adapting its decoding complexity and performance according to propagation conditions and receiver capabilities. This new system exploits concepts like Bit Interleaved Coded Modulation with Iterative Decoding (BICM-ID), Hierarchical Modulation as well as Incremental Redundancy. The challenge is to build a Hierarchical BICM-ID system configuration to ensure communications from a single transmitter and to different receiver with heterogeneous communication capabilities.
