Spectrum scarcity is a major challenge for future communication systems. Since the spectrum allocation for broadcasting is over-provisioned, the optimized usage of the terrestrial television frequencies bears a huge potential in terms of a second Digital Dividend.
An efficient frequency usage is strongly enabled by the creation of large Single Frequency Networks (SFN), i.e., the synchronized transmission of the same content from different radio cells using the same frequency resource. In Germany, the DVB-T standard (Digital Video Broadcast - Terrestrial) is currently used for the distribution of television content. However, constraints in the physical layer design as well as the high-tower high-power concept of DVB-T limit the possibility of large, nation-wide SFNs. Alternative concepts for the future distribution of television content are the second generation broadcasting standard DVB-T2 which enables larger SFN areas by a higher flexibility in the physical layer design and the evolved multimedia broadcast/multicast service (eMBMS) which has been defined by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) as part of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) and enables the broadcast capabilities in a mobile broadband LTE network.
In this thesis the capabilties of eMBMS compared to DVB-T/T2 have been investigated in terms of througput and coverage. Additionally, several possible future network topologies and configurations have been discussed.
