Communication via speech is essential for human interaction, more specifically digital speech transmission is crucial for today's human communication. In many applications, however, additive noise reduces the speech intelligibility and increases the listening effort. Enhancing the listening, i.e. improving speech intelligibility while preserving speech quality, is a topic of current research. To achieve this goal, the modification of the speech signal before being presented to a listener in a noisy environment is called Near End Listening Enhancement (NELE).
State-of-the-art NELE algorithms perform processing only in frequency domain and they do not react to fast changing speech. In this thesis, a new approach is suggested by using a multiband Dynamic Range Processor (DRP), in order to gain better results than current algorithms. To fulfill the requirements for listening enhancement, the static and dynamic behavior of the DRP is adapted to the current noise, considering the psycho-acoustic effects of masking and loudness. Due to the high complexity of the parameter settings of a multiband DRP, multiple algorithms are suggested and evaluated in an iterative procedure.
