Abstract

Mobile Communication with high audio fidelity is an everyday necessity for everybody, but the technology widely available on the market just provides mono narrowband and in rare cases mono wideband (HD) audio quality. This demonstrator offers the experience of future mobile audio quality featuring wideband and even binaural HD audio quality. Using prototypes of a binaural headset and recording device, two groups of people, one stationary, one connected via a wireless link, are empowered to communicate with the feeling to be located in the same room. One participant in each group wears the binaural recording headset which records the onversation in the near end group and the other participants use standard headsets to follow the conversation in the far end group. The audio processing is conducted using the well-known real time RTProc software architecture which allows to switch between mono and binaural communication with different modes of the AMR narrow or wideband codec or even transparent transmission. To avoid echoes generated by the acoustic path from the earpieces to the binaural recording microphones, echo compensation is also employed. This demonstrator lets every participant experience the superiority in terms of intelligibility and ease of group communication of spatial audio conferencing using binaural HD voice over standard conferencing systems using mono narrowband audio quality.
