PHD Exam of Dr.-Ing. Markus Niermann
Dr.-Ing. Markus Niermann has successfully completed his oral PHD examination. In the morning, Dr. Niermann gave a 45-minute lecture on his work on the topic:
"Digital Enhancement of Speech Perception in Noisy Environments"
Award: "Patent of the Month December"
In November 2017 we reported on the successful patent application for active suppression of the occlusion effect (DE102016011719B3) by the inventors Stefan Liebich, Carlotta Anemüller, and Daniel Rüschen.
Our research assistants were with their company Ferncast and Mayah Communications at the "30. Tonmeistertagung" in Cologne. There they presented methods and devices for streaming complex scenarios, e.g. from a radio station to the internet.
This year the IKS took part in the RWTH Science Night "5 vor 12". On Friday, 9 November 2018, between 7 p.m. and midnight, science could be experienced.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Vary | ITG Fellow
On November 5, 2018 Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Vary has been named as Fellow of the Informationstechnische Gesellschaft (ITG) at VDE. With this decision, the award committee and the ITG executive board honored his outstanding merits, his commitment and his excellent scientific achievements in the field of mobile communications.
2nd Place at the AES MATLAB Plugin Student Competition
The student project "Binaural Piano", which was developed in the "Real-time Audio Processing" laboratory, was especially successful. At the 145th AES Convention in New York, a jury awarded Maximilian Kentgens, Tobias Kabzinski, Sebastian Nagel, Till Hardenbicker and Benjamin Agthe a second place in the AES MATLAB Plugin Student Competition for their student project. A great joint success of students and staff!
First Semester Students at IKS
For a successful start of the first semester students we once again provided presentations and demonstrations in our institute. We prepared special experiments and demos, easy to understand, in our typical research topics "digital speech and audio processing" and "communications".
Our scientific co-workers presented their research results at numerous conferences.
EUSIPCO 2018: Top 3 of the 3-MT Challenge
At the EUSIPCO 2018 in Rome, Stefan Liebich has been voted one of the 3 best contributions at the 3-MT Challenge with his presentation "Opening the ear digitally - Natural own voice perception while using headphones or hearing aids". In this challenge, outstanding dissertation topics that have been presented to a broad audience of experts in a three-minute lecture will be honoured.
Sebastian Nagel attended the International Conference on Audio for Virtual and Augmented Reality (AVAR) of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) in Redmond, WA, USA. He presented "Acoustic Head-Tracking for Acquisition of Head-Related Transfer Functions with Unconstrained Subject Movement."
