Peter Vary leitete das Forscherteam (Philips, IBM), welches 1988 den Standardisierungswettbewerb zum GSM Vollraten-Codec gewann. Seit 1990 trugen die Arbeiten am Institut für Nachrichtengeräte und Datenverarbeitung der RWTH Aachen unter seiner Leitung kontinuierlich zu verschiedenen internationalen Codec Standardisierungen bei. Darüber hinaus steht seine Gruppe für zahlreiche Innovationen im Bereich der digitalen Sprachübertragung: z.B. kombinierte Echokompensation und Störgeräuschreduktion, psycho-akustische Störreduktion, künstliche Bandbreitenerweiterung von Sprachsignalen, Fehlerverdeckung durch Soft Decision Quellendecodierung, iterative Quellen- und Kanaldecodierung sowie Turbo DeCodulation.
