Master-Vortrag: Dynamic Playback of Higher-Order Ambisonics Signal with Headphones

The dynamic playback of higher order Ambisonics (HOA) signals with headphones, is a field that has been pursued for many years and is increasingly growing with the rise of hardware performance as well as the current trend for virtual reality applications. Since the dynamic rendering of the audio signal is highly computational intensive, many different approaches have been proposed to accommodate for this problem, ranging from the use of first order Ambisonics (FOA) to the truncation of the head related transfer functions (HRTFs).

This thesis tries to build on the improvements that have been achieved in the field of binaural rendering to create an immersive experience of an audio scene. The implementation of the renderer is performed using a modular approach, which will enable its extension in future works. To evaluate the work of this thesis, several listening experiments are performed that compare the binaurally rendered signal to the Ambisonics signal of a real loudspeaker setup. The experiments show that the renderer has a great externalization and the binaurally rendered signal is plausible, but most often not authentic.
